The assessment journey

Knowing what to expect makes the process easier. Here's what happens, step by step, from first conversation to feedback.

1

Initial consultation / screening

A brief discussion or screening questionnaire to make sure a full assessment is the right next step for you or your child.

2

Information gathering

Developmental history is collected using standard forms. These come from you and, where relevant, from family members, partners, or school. For children, this often includes a detailed school information questionnaire covering social interaction, communication, behaviour, emotional regulation, sensory processing, and learning.

3

Clinical interview & observation

The core appointment(s) use structured tools that are backed by evidence: ADOS-2 for observation and ADI-R for developmental history. These can take place in person or securely online.

4

Review & reporting

A comprehensive review of all evidence gathered, brought together into a clear, written report with practical recommendations.

5

Feedback & next steps

A dedicated session to talk through the findings, go through the report together, and discuss the support available after the assessment, or onward referral.

This is not a diagnostic assessment and cannot provide a diagnosis. A formal diagnosis of autism requires a multidisciplinary team, in line with NICE guidance. This assessment provides structured insight and guidance, and may contribute to further assessment pathways.
